Where is the Gulf of Papagayo?

Located on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, the Gulf of Papagayo plays a very significant role in Costa Rica’s tourism, retirement & Real Estate options. The Gulf of Papagayo was originally home small fishing communities. The protected beaches in the areas of Ocotal Beach, Payas del Coco, Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama gave boats the needed protection from the sea. Today these protected beaches provide swimming and watersports opportunities to many thousands of residents, expats and tourists. The Costa Rican government recognized in the 1960’s the importance of the Gulf of Papagayo area and by the 70’s ecotourism came to live in Costa Rica. As investors started looking at the Guanacaste area special provisions were made including the The Peninsula Papagayo and the airport was opened in Liberia. In the late 80’s development started with the Four Seasons on The Peninsula Papagayo among other projects. In 1995 The Liberia airport, code LIR known as Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (Link)  became an international airport. With these and many more developments the Northern Pacific Beaches on the Gulf of Papagayo are now Costa Rica’s premier destination.

Wild Life is abundant in the gulf. The beaches are alive with exotic birds, while the Pacific Ocean hosts a large and diverse eco system. Diving to check out what’s below the water or sport fishing makes a great day. Depending on the time of year you can witness sea turtles nesting or see the orca whales moving trough the gulf.
